Headlights is part girl-group pop and part indie rock, with coed lead vocalists Erin Fein and Tristan Wraight trading leads and harmonizing effortlessly. The Champaign, Ill., group has been plugging along for about five years, releasing increasingly better albums complemented by remixes from a collection of friends. The group's 2008 effort "Some Racing, Some Stopping" delivered an ebullient collection of uptempo tracks that recalled indie faves like Velocity Girl and The Lucksmiths. The Love Language began as the solo project of North Carolina-based songwriter Stuart McLamb and later blossomed into a big ol' band. Draped in swaths of reverb and home production, the group's eponymous debut LP has the rambunctious spirit of The Walkmen or Saturday Looks Good to Me. Lawrence's Cowboy Indian Bear is a superb new Lawrence band featuring former Jen Say Kwahs frontman Marty Hillard along with ex-Kennedy Luck Clubbers C.J. Calhoun and Beau Bruns. Picking up where those bands left off, CIB composes deft and brainy indie pop with party-down beats and lots of melodic left turns. Points of reference include Death Cab and Architecture in Helsinki, but these dudes are digging deep into the well to come up with something fresh.
