The Lied Center of Kansas presents NPR's Neal Conan and Ensemble Galilei in "First Person: Stories from the Edge of the World" with stunningphotographs from the National Geographic Image Collection projected onstage on a large screen. This unique performance takes a glimpse into the personal experience of public accomplishment on a global level through an exceptional multimedia collaboration between Conan, the extraordinary Celtic and early music of Ensemble Galilei, and National Geographic. Examining the theme of humanexploration, the performance features Conan reading excerpts from the journals of celebrated explorers including Jacques Cousteau, George Mallory and Charles Darwin as well as works by writers such as Jim Harrison. With spectacular projected images, artwork and photographs from the National Geographic Image Collection and the connotative and suggestive music of Ensemble Galilei, this shared performance provides the audience with a rare opportunity to delve into an impossible journey of images, commentary and music.Ensemble Galilei is an assembly of players from both classical and Celtic traditional backgrounds, playing Irish and Scottish airs and dance tunes, early and medieval music and original compositions. The group consists of Hanneke Cassel on fiddle, Allison Edberg on Baroque violin, Kathryn Montoya on recorders, whistle and oboe, Sue Richards on Celtic harp, Carolyn Anderson Surrick on viola da gamba, Danny Mallon and Jackie Moran on percussion, Ginger Hildebrand and Rosie Shipley on fiddle.Neal Conan, a veteran at National Public Radio, has worked there as a reporter, producer, editor and host for more than 25 years. He has worked on every program produced by NPR News and has covered the Iran-Iraq War, the Gulf War, presidential elections, inaugurations and one impeachment. He is presently the host of NPR's "Talk of the Nation," and is the author of "Play by Play: Baseball, Radio, and Life in the Last Chance League." First Person is the second multimedia collaboration for Conan and Ensemble Galilei; the first, "A Universe of Dreams," featured images from the Hubble Space Telescope. This previous effort toured the U.S. for two years.
