The Spencer Museum of Art will showcase both the traditional and the experimental ends of the art spectrum in a single day, presenting two distinctly different talks on September 11. Performance artist Laurie Anderson will discuss her show HOMELAND at 4:30 PM, followed by honorary SMA curator of quilts Barbara Brackman, who will lead a gallery talk at 5:30 PM on Quilts: Flora Botanica. Both presentations are free and open to the public.Anderson, who has performed at the University twice before, is a performance artist whose work ranges from spoken word to elaborate musical and visual events. Anderson will speak about the process of creating HOMELAND, which she will perform at the Lied Center at 7:30 PM, Friday, Sept. 12. HOMELAND addresses Anderson's reactions to New York City after 9/11. For ticket information about Anderson's Friday night performance, please contact the Lied Center at 785.864.2787 or visit www.lied.ku.eduFollowing Anderson's talk, Brackman, a Lawrence resident and internationally known textiles expert, will lead viewers through the Kress Gallery and provide an overview of Quilts: Flora Botanica. Her talk is an encore of a July presentation that drew a huge crowd. The exhibition examines the sources and symbolism of floral patterns in American quilting. Brackman has written many books on quilting, the most recent of which, Making History: Quilts and Fabric from 1890-1970, is on sale in the Spencer's Museum Shop. Quilts: Flora Botanica is sponsored by Morgan Stanley.
