The Music & Dance Department in the School of Fine Arts welcomes the U.S. Air Force Heartland of America Band Brass in Blue, with special guest Joseph Alessi, principal trombonist of the New York Philharmonic. The band will present a concert on Tuesday, October 21, 2008 at 7:30 p.m. at the Lied Center. The event is free and open to the public, but tickets must be obtained from the Lied Center box office for admission. Brass in Blue features members of the U.S. Air Force Heartland of America Band, a 45-member Air Force squadron of professional musicians who performs 450 concerts annually to convey the bravery, sacrifices and commitment of U.S. Airmen. Brass in Blue is a pioneering symphonic brass ensemble that is comprised of ten brass players, a percussionist and a vocalist. The ensemble maintains a rigorous performance schedule presenting a diverse repertoire featuring orchestral transcriptions, patriotic favorites, jazz standards, new compositions and arrangements. The KU Trombone Choir will perform with Brass and Blue and Alessi at the conclusion of the concert.About Joseph Alessi Alessi began musical studies in his native California with his father, Joseph Alessi, Sr. As a high school student in San Rafael, Calif., he became a soloist with the San Francisco Symphony before continuing his musical training at Philadelphia's Curtis Institute of Music. Joseph Alessi was appointed Principal Trombone of the New York Philharmonic in the spring of 1985. Alessi is currently on the faculty of The Juilliard School; his students now occupy posts with many major symphony orchestras in the U.S. and internationally. As a clinician for the Edwards Instrument Company, he has also given master classes throughout the world and has toured Europe extensively as a master teacher and recitalist. He is an active soloist, recitalist, and chamber music performer. He has performed as a guest soloist with the Lincoln Symphony, National Repertory Orchestra, Colorado Symphony Orchestra, Seoul Philharmonic, Hague Philharmonic, and the Hartford Symphony, among others. He has also performed as a soloist with several leading concert bands, including the U.S. Military Academy Band at West Point, U.S. Army Band (Pershing's Own), and the U.S. Marine Band (President's Own). Alessi is the founding member of the Summit Brass ensemble at the Rafael Mendez Brass Institute in Tempe, Ariz. In 2002, Alessi was awarded an International Trombone Association Award for his contributions to the world of trombone music and trombone playing.
