The KU Department of Design welcomes Hallmark Design Symposium speaker Roger Black, designer, to KU on Monday, October 20, 2008 at 6 p.m. in Wescoe Hall, room 3139. Black is known for staying slightly ahead of societal and technological changes. A publication designer at Rolling Stone in the '70s and The New York Times in the '80s, he was an early adopter of "desktop publishing."In the mid-1990s, he led the design of important content-rich web sites such as MSNBC.com and @Home. Some of his early thinking about the Internet is reflected his book, Web Sites that Work, written with Sean Elder. More recently he directed the redesigns for chron.com (the Houston Chronicle's site), Bloomberg.com and The New York Sun. Now Black is at work on a new generation of digital publications. He keeps a hand in the "old" media, helping with a redesign of Newsweek last fall -- the fourth for the magazine he has done during the last 20 years.Continuing as a partner in the Font Bureau and Danilo Black, he works from a small studio in New York. About the Hallmark Design SymposiumFor nearly 25 years, the Hallmark Design Symposium Series has been offered by the KU Department of Design, sponsored by an endowment from Hallmark Cards, Inc. Each semester several creative and articulate designers, writers, artists, and educators visit KU to share their experience.
