The Lied Center of Kansas and Hill's Pet Nutrition present the Soweto Gospel Choir performing original African gospel songs and unique interpretations of popular music by Bob Marley, Bob Dylan and U2.The 2006 and 2007 Grammy award-winning Soweto Gospel Choir is a 26-member vocal ensemble, performing in five of South Africa's 11 official languages. With inspirational programs of tribal, traditional and popular African and international gospel songs, Soweto Gospel Choir stage passionate performances with traditional call and response singing and time-honored African dancing.Soweto, an English syllabic abbreviation of South Western Townships, is an urban area just outside Johannesburg. The choir makes use of the wealth of talent in the area and has recruited the best singers from the churches and communities in the area. Presenting vibrant selections from their Grammy award-winning 2007 album African Spirit, the choir will perform an inspirational program of tribal, traditional and popular African gospel songs and poignant interpretations of popular music.Soweto Gospel Choir is a proud Ambassador for 46665, former President Nelson Mandela's AIDS awareness initiative, having performed at the inaugural concert in Cape Town in 2003, and the concerts in Johannesburg in December 2007 and London in June 2008. The choir also has its own charity foundation, Nkosi's Haven Vukani, which raises money to support AIDS orphans organizations that receive little or no government funding.Since 2003, the group has performed around the world to capacity crowds and standing ovations, staged passionate performances with joyful harmonies and voices from heaven, and has collaborated with incredible performing artists including Bono, Peter Gabriel and Queen.Tickets are available at the Lied Center of Kansas.
