Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings / The Ivan Milev Band
There's no telling how many Sharon Joneses there are in this world, but thank God-of-Deep-Funk at least one of them is finally getting her due. After spending most of her career singing session work and working as a prison guard, Jones connected with Desco Records in 1996 and began gaining notoriety with the Desco Super Soul Revue. Her dynamic stage presence, oh-no-you-didn't voice and and sturdy dancing high-heels dazzled in-the-know funk '45 enthusiasts like Lawrence's Josh Powers (who regularly spins her during his Scenebooster sets). In 2000, Jones enlisted the Soul Providers (the former house band of Descoe Records) to begin a new chapter as Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings. The nine-strong ensemble has been dishing out deep-dish slices of throwback funk and soul ever since, penning original numbers that could get James Brown on his good foot.
