The Brent Berry Band returns to Lawrence for a New Year's Eve soiree. Berry cut his teeth in the Lawrence music scene circa 2000 with backing from members of local horn band The Secondhands. His debut album "Inland" offered up a seamless platter of roots reggae, rocksteady, and folk music. As entertainers for some of Lawrence's chillest parties, Berry and his "Roots Crew" became one of the top local draws before he split for Taos, New Mexico. Nowadays, Brent and his band lay down their own goodtime blend of Afro-Coastal-Americana-Grass.Billy the Squirrel's line-up recently changed with the addition of special guests on fiddle and banjo, while retaining the original essence of their sound. The band's music ranges from bluegrass harmonies to extensive improvisational rock and funk jams. The Calamity Cubes is an acoustic four-piece from Wichita that purveys powerful country and bluegrass-styled originals. Members Joey Henry, Brook Blanche, Jimijon Hansen, and Patrick Herd sing about drinking and murderin' and love and stuff with a rotating hick-estra of banjo, mandolin, guitar, harmonica, and upright bass. In their spare time, the Cubes enjoy old trucks, simple living and drinking beer while floating down Kansas Rivers.
