Stan Kenton, an influential jazz pianist and big band conductor, was born in Wichita, Kan. in 1911.Kenton led a popular jazz ensemble in the 1940s, was a pioneer in the development of "The Wall of Sound" musical style and won Grammy awards in both 1962 and 1963. At the Lied Center, Stan's unique "Kenton Style" Christmas classics will be performed by the Brass All-Stars Big Band.Boston Brass consists of five talented members including J.D. Shaw on French horn, Jeff Conner on trumpet, Lance LaDuke on trombone and euphonium, Jose Sibaja on trumpet and Andrew Hitz on tuba.Performing over 100 concerts a year, the members of Boston Brass have dazzled audiences at concerts and jazz festivals around the world since 1986.Boston Brass' performance is one of several jazz/classical-themed presentations in the Lied Center 2008-09 season which has included Branford Marsalis and Alexander String Quartet in the fall and with Metta Quintet, Imani Winds and Calder Quartet still to come.Tickets are available for Boston Brass being presented at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 13, 2008, at the Lied Center of Kansas.
