This year marks the 7th anniversary of KU Jazz Vespers, taking place on Thursday, December 11, 7:30 p.m. at the Lied Center. The annual concert has proven to be a popular and enjoyable end to the KU fall semester, as each year many popular holiday classics are re-interpreted in a jazz setting. This year’s concert will feature KU Jazz Ensembles I and II, and Jazz Combo I, and will be hosted by Chuck Berg, professor of theatre and film, who will also perform on saxophone with Jazz Combo I. Several guest vocal soloists will perform, including KU professors John Stephens, Genaro Mendez, Ellen Bottorff and John Staniunas, and Vince Gnojek, KU woodwind faculty member, will perform a saxophone solo. The program will include a Latin/African-themed rendition of “The Little Drummer Boy” by KU student vocalist Kelsie Clark and three student percussionists; arrangements of holiday classics written by Dan Gailey, KU Director of Jazz Studies; a performance of Bing Crosby’s classic “Mele Kalikimaka;” and KU student Logan Heer’s new arrangement of “Your’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch” from the classic Dr. Seuss holiday television show, performed by Jazz Ensemble II.
