The Department of Music and Dance in the School of Fine Arts presents the KU Wind Ensemble on Sunday, April 27, 2008, at 2:30 p.m. at the Lied Center of Kansas.This concert is part of Festival of the Arts, a month-long celebration dedicated to Murphy Hall's 50th anniversary, and will feature a work written by conductor and KU alumni, David Holsinger.The first half of the concert, entitled Wild Nights, will feature music from the Wind Ensemble's upcoming CD, which will be recorded at KU later this semester. All of these works have been written in the past several years and are loosely based on a nocturnal theme. The program opens with "Wild Blue Yonder," a piece written for the United States Air Force Band by James Barnes, KU professor of music composition. The program also features "Anahita," written by Roshanne Etezady, "Dusk" by Steven Bryant, "Shadow Dance" by David Dzubay and the epic piece "Concerto for Soprano Saxophone and Wind Ensemble" by John Mackey, featuring KU Professor Vincent Gnojek on soprano saxophone. The show will close with a performance of Frank Ticheli's new work, "Wild Nights!" The director and conductor of the KU Wind Ensemble is Scott A. Weiss, Director of Bands at KU.The second half of the concert features the work of notable conductor and KU alumni David Holsinger with the KU Faculty Chamber Ensemble. "Songs of this War (1914-1918)," will be performed by the Faculty Chamber Ensemble with Holsinger conducting, and it will feature two vocal solos by KU faculty member Julia Broxholm, soprano, and KU alumni Andrew Stuckey, baritone."Songs of this War" is a song cycle based on six poems chosen from the works of Wilfred Owen, Ivor Gurney, Siegfried Sassoon, Edward Thomas and John McCrae, set to Holsinger's music. The poems were first encountered in a book entitled Poems of the Great War, 1914-1918, selected and edited by John William Cunliffe, on behalf of the Belgian Scholarship Committee, and published by Macmillan Company of New York in 1918. Guest composer and conductor Holsinger is on the faculty of Lee University, in Cleveland, Tennessee. He is the inaugural conductor of the Lee Wind Ensemble and also teaches composition, orchestration and conducting. Lee studied music composition at KU with Dr. Charles Hoag and received his DMA in 2006. Holsinger is an award-winning composer and has served in as a distinguished composer at numerous residencies across the United States.Tickets for this concert are $10/general admission and $7/senior citizens and students.
