The Department of Music and Dance in the School of Fine Arts presents the KU Symphony Orchestra/KUSO on Saturday, April 26, 2008, at 7:30 p.m. at the Lied Center of Kansas.This concert is part of Festival of the Arts, a month-long celebration dedicated to Murphy Hall's 50th anniversary, and will highlight renowned violinist, Brian Lewis.The first half of the concert will include Violin Concerto in E Minor, Op. 64 by Felix Mendelssohn, featuring Lewis on violin.Lewis holds both his undergraduate and MM degrees from The Juilliard School and is the David and Mary Winton Green Chair Fellow in String Performance and Pedagogy at the University of Texas at Austin. He is also Artistic Director of the Starling-DeLay Symposium on Violin Studies at The Juilliard School, concertmaster of the River Oaks Chamber Orchestra in Houston, and Artistic Director of the Starling Distinguished Violinist Series at the University of Texas. Lewis has performed at New York's Carnegie Hall and Avery Fisher Hall, as well as with orchestras in Louisiana, Kansas City, Syracuse, Denmark, Germany and more. He is an award-winning artist, taking home the top prize from numerous young artist contests, including the grand prize in the Mid-America Violin Competition. He has performed frequently as a member of the Kansas Arts Commission Touring Program and the Mid-America Arts Alliance Regional Touring Program, and radio and television appearances include performances on NPR and CBS's "Sunday Morning."The second half of the program will feature Symphony No. 5 in E Minor, Op. 64 by Tchaikovsky, performed by the Symphony Orchestra.The conductor of the KUSO is David Neely, Director of Orchestral Activities and assistant professor of music at KU.
