Oakley Hall's fast ascension from a NYC buzz band to a critical darling signed to Merge Records happened for all the right reasons: stellar musicianship and great tunes. The six-piece group concocts an intoxicating neo-Appalachian brew with fiddle, lap steel, baritone guitar and dulcimer along with traditional rock instrumentation. Equally capable male and female leads (Pat Sullivan and Rachel Cox) harmonize seamlessly, and the band rocks about as blissfully as My Morning Jacket on a Coachella bender. The group's fourth LP "I'll Follow You" is its catchiest to date, demonstrating a breadth of influences and a steadfast dedication to sidestepping alt-country norms.
