Words are very unnecessary for Unwed Sailor, a largely instrumental band with a tendency to linger on expansive, atmospheric soundtracks for sleepless nights. Thick fuzz-bass and chimey guitar arpeggios dominate the band's compositions, which strike an agreeable balance between Godspeed You Black Emperor and The Appleseed Cast, with overtones of Portishead. The band's releases often take the high-concept route-2003's "The Marionette and the Music Box" came packaged as a hardbound picture book. Bandleader Johnathon Ford spent some time in Lawrence recently, revamping Unwed Sailor's lineup and prepping new material for a summer 2007 release of a new LP titled "Little Wars."
