The next concert by KU's Wind Ensemble, conducted by director of bands John P. Lynch, features festive music influenced by Hispanic culture. The concert, entitled "South of the Border," opens with Aaron Copland's "El Salon Mexico" and moves into Stravinsky's masterwork "Concerto for Piano and Wind Instruments," featuring guest artist James D. Cockman III on piano; Cockman is a KU award-winning DMA student in piano performance. The performance continues with "Amparita Roca" by Jamie Texidor and "Sleep" by Eric Whitacre. The ensemble concludes the concert with a performance of "Fandangos" by Roberto Sierra, the notable composer. Sierra's works have been performed by leading orchestras, ensembles and festivals across the USA and in Europe, including at the inaugural concert of the 2002 world-renowned Proms in London, where "Fandangos" was performed by the BBC Symphony Orchestra. Lynch said of Sierra's piece: "'Fandangos' is a mesmerizing piece that views a traditional Hispanic idiom through a contemporary lens, moving back and forth between yesterday and tomorrow."The performance will be held on Tuesday, March 14, 2006, at 7:30pm at The Lied Center of Kansas. Tickets are $7 for general admission and $5 for senior citizens and students. For tickets, call the Lied Center box office at (785) 864-ARTS (2787).For more information about the KU Wind Ensemble performance, please contact KU's Music and Dance Department at (785) 864-3436.
