There would seem to be a major divide between those who are not religious and those whose religion informs everything they do. The latter simply cannot do things that go against their core beliefs.
Of course there are many religions with many core beliefs, and there are those who never set foot in a church who, nevertheless, hold beliefs that are dear to them.
I would hope that someone who is running for a public office would make it very clear to their constituents where they stand so people can vote accordingly.
Beverly, yes many have done evil in the name of this or that religious belief. The twentieth century was replete with instances of religious intolerance including hundreds of millions slaughtered to further the 'religious beliefs' of secular materialists who claimed man and central government power as gods to be worshipped.
The march of secular materialists continue apace in this century. Those who believe that homosexual relationships are morally wrong should not be forced by zealots to help celebrate those relationships. Citizens who oppose gay marriage should not be forced to provide private business services from the sweat of their brow to celebrate that which they find abhorrent.
Well said Gerald.
There are an estimated 20,000 to 50,000 followers of the Christian Identity Movement, whose ideology is a mixture of selected Christian principles and Nazism. Racialism, or race-based philosophy, is the core tenet of their brand of Christianity. Most CI adherents are White Nationalists or support racial segregation. Some believe that Jews are genetically compelled by their Satanic or Edomite ancestry to carry on a conspiracy against the Adamic seedline and today have achieved almost complete control of the Earth through their illegitimate claim to the white race's status as God's chosen people.
As a general rule, Christian Identity followers adhere to the traditional orthodox Christian
views on the role of women, abortion, and homosexuality, and they believe that racial miscegenation is a sin and a violation of God's law which commands that all creatures produce "kind after kind." They believe that African-American are subhuman and have no souls. According, to their “religious morality,” it is wrong to show African-Americans basic human dignity. Their “religious beliefs” would prevent them from “celebrating” bi-racial marriages, and under the proposed legislation, they would be justified in refusing to serve or do business with Blacks or, for that matter, any group that is not all-white, as they believe “racial mixing” is morally wrong.
Under your philosophy, Mr. Kerr, such discrimination should be permitted under the guise of “religious freedom.”
Thankfully, the vast majority of Americans find any type of bigotry, especially under the guise of "religious freedom," to be not only repugnant, but anti-American. . .
Bob, bigots abound on all sides. The christian identity folks you describe seem quite unchristian and fanatic to me. I'm glad there's only 20k to 50k of them. There are literally hundreds of millions of bully's who would cram their idea of morality down your throat to demean you and prove your insignificance and weakness in their eyes. We should not empower politically correct bully's by giving them the power of law over us. We should not empower politically incorrect bully's by giving them the power of law over us.
Liberty from central power coercion is what is needed. Coercion which quickly becomes bullying of the masses by the politically correct is to be far more feared than a few (relatively speaking) kooks who have zero chance of forcing their brand of pseudo religion down our throats by law. Political correctness in this era is driven by the unction of moral superiority demeaning great traditions and virtues lauded in the past. Unfortunately and dangerously they replace them with all matter of destructive nonsense which they insist on codifying into law. Human liberty is far more threatened by the bludgeon of political correctness which at every hand rushes to legislate it's current fashionable view of morality while tyrannizing a previously free people.
