"...the moral test of government is how that government treats those who are in the dawn of life, the children; those who are in the twilight of life, the elderly; those who are in the shadows of life; the sick, the needy and the handicapped. " ~ Last Speech of Hubert H. Humphrey
"A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Ghandi
"The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much; it is whether we provide enough for those who have too little."
Franklin D. Roosevelt
...the moral test of a person is how that person treats those who are in the dawn of life, the children; those who are in the twilight of life, the elderly; those who are in the shadows of life; the sick, the needy and the handicapped.
It's "people" that elect "government". I don't see much difference. One could say it's also a moral test of a "state" or a "country".
Back in the predawn of history, this was the very reason that "governments" were first formed; to protect, defend and care for the group as a whole. And a competent leader did just that. It's been a struggle to balance the interests of the few and powerful against the interests of the many ever since.
The poor, sick, elderly are discarded here in KS. We as a people here in Kansas ought to be ashamed at how we treat the weak, except for the Republican party, they rejoice in the misery they cause, & if they didn't cause it, they ignore it!
Their arguments are utterly illogical. There is no possible way that services can be maintained while adding another layer of bureaucracy (corporate administration), dividends to be paid to owners; while delivering services through a further fragmented delivery system.
This is insane behavior on the part of people who have no idea what they're doing.
They know exactly what they're doing and that is what is so evil about them.
So how's that not reducing the waiting lists going to work when the Justice Department sues them for violating the rights of the disabled?
Brownback doesn't need KanCare''s so called savings to get them off of the waiting lists. The state of Kansas is given federal $$ for that purpose. KanCare is already in a financial mess and needs HCBS $$ to sustain it. That is why he is so desperate (in my mind anyway) to get I/DD long term care into KanCare,
Which In return supports will suffer, TCM's will lose jobs (putting more people in the unemployment line) and already overworked and unpaid staff will take on the TCM responsibilities because it is doubtful that the staff with KanCare will be able too take on more job duties or want to take on that role.
deec- you don't understand. This Administration is G-O-D, and they will do what they want, when they want, and how they want - as long as it only causes damage the weak, poor, and not-friends of the Gov. The Justice Department ??? Hah !! that is just part of the Fed Government that this state doesn't care about (they don't pass out funds and subsidies).
They'll just set a special legislative session and pas a law saying the Feds can't enforce federal laws for anyone born in Kansas.
Hmmm, what would Jesus do? That's probably important in a state like Kansas, right?
"...Crum argued to the House Appropriations Committee that the long-term care must be brought under KanCare so that the state can realize savings..."
Oh, right, that's it. Jesus always talked about realizing savings when it came to those who suffer. Thank you Mr. Crum for putting us back on the moral path.
Gosh it's good to live in Kansas. You feel so clean!
If "Brownie" was pro-abortion I think most of you would agree with many of his positions.
You think wrong.
What a statement ! off point..
I may have been wrong thinking it will take 10-15 yr. to get out of this mess. It is looking like 20-25 yrs.
I cannot believe our legislature is doing this to people.
One more example of how the Republican "culture life" stops at the moment of birth.
Can you believe Brownback? Who does he think he is trying to give more services to those in while saving money at the same time? Outrageous!
And, if you believe that KanCare will do that, there's a bridge in Brooklyn...
I've yet to see any of his divided loaves and fishes end up feeding an entire crowd.
Paul R. Getto - Does this study also explain why it is worsening in large portions of the states of Washington and Oregon ..... which are very progressive Democratic states.
I would guess the liberal site left out an explanation for that .... didn't fit their agenda I am guessing
Rightly so, it appears that there is an overwhelming response that Brownback and his Republican buddies once again have proved that they are heartless SOB's and have no consience whatsoever. Perhaps they would feel differently if it was one of their kids, grandkids, or parents who were blind, handicapped, or disabled, although it would not surprise me at all if they would just stand by and watch them die without lifting a finger, as long as it put one more penny in the rich man's pocket. "Truly it is harder for a rich man to get to heaven than it is for a camel to go through the eye of a needle." question4U is right on target, the sickest part of their rhetoric is that these same people like to parade up & down the street and fly down to Texas to proclaim in front of the media how much they are all "Christians." I don't know what Bible they are reading from, but it's not the same one that millions of other people are reading from. Jesus preached to help the blind, sick, & disabled, not crap all over them. What they truly are, are hypocrites who WILL have to answer to Jesus someday and I truly believe that they will meet their just reward at that time.
Brownie and the higher up cronies wouldn't care if it were one of their own who were disabled, because they have the money to pay for specialized services and supports out of pocket. In their mind, everyone else should just know how to be rich to afford all those things, too.
