On Lawrence man faces federal prosecution for stolen handgun

Brock Masters 3 years, 9 months ago

Prosecute him to the fullest extent of the law. I am pro-gun and I am pro-sending their butts to jail when they violate gun laws.

Maddy Griffin 3 years, 9 months ago

Nobody is trying to take away your 2nd Amendment rights. Get over it.

somebodynew 3 years, 9 months ago

But -did this gun stay in Kansas the entire time and did the guy who possessed it ?? Then will the AG file charges on someone for enforcing Federal Gun laws ??? I don't think that new law made any mention about legal ownership. (It may have I am not sure.) This could be the first 'test' case of the new law !!!

somebodynew 3 years, 9 months ago

Well, Mr. BrightBoy - if you would take time to at least know a little bit about that law, the guns don't have to be MADE in Kansas. But that is why I worded my comment that way. I guess things like that get by you tho.

KSManimal 3 years, 9 months ago

Dang-it! If this doesn't demonstrate the need for more gun laws, I dunno what does. I mean really...... if that ksmanimal guy weren't allowed to have 15-round magazines, this never would've happened.

Crazy_Larry 3 years, 9 months ago

Of course it would! Moar lawz now! The police should be able to stop and frisk anyone at any time... SAVE US NANNY STATE!

jafs 3 years, 9 months ago

The irony is that those generally in favor of stop and frisk type laws oppose gun regulation, and those generally opposed favor it.

SnakeFist 3 years, 9 months ago

Tougher gun laws would reduce this sort of thing. You can't flood the country with guns and then argue that people need to be armed to protect themselves from criminals with guns - "we need more guns because there are too many guns" is simply illogical.

Gun-nuts note that Chicago's tough gun laws haven't stopped gun violence there, but the problem isn't with Chicago its with the sea of uncontrolled guns that surround it. Tough gun laws in Europe and Japan have clearly worked. Reduce the number of people with guns and there will be fewer criminals with guns - who would criminals steal their guns from if there are fewer irresponsible "law-abiding" gun-nuts?

Anthony Mall 3 years, 9 months ago

Please review gun violence in Houston versus Chicago 2012... By your theory cold weather causes gun crime.

Brian Laird 3 years, 9 months ago

No it doesn't. The only thing the Houston versus Chicago data shows is the need for national gun laws - not piecemeal state laws that are easily circumvented by driving (in the case of Chicago, a few miles to Indiana). London a city of 8 million people (about 3-4 times the size of either Houston or Chicago) has less than half the homicides as Houston. Given that London is on average colder than Houston just makes your ridiculous "theory" seem even more pathetic.

Anthony Mall 3 years, 9 months ago

Ok, you can go door to door and ask for everyone's guns and we can start over. Please compare apples to apples and not laws in the US versus those in Europe. I am sorry that FACTS in this country destroy your case but you cant ignore them just because they show real stats versus laws in jolly old England. I believe this country was founded by pilgrims who were escaping tyranny in England. You can't pick and choose which facts to use and ones to ignore. You can ask native Americans how turning over their guns worked for them if you like. Or you can accept that it didn't work out so well for them. This article is about a gun owner who reported the gun stolen and now the felon is headed to prison!

optimist 3 years, 9 months ago

Were some of those homicides in London caused by guns? In a country where guns are banned?

Michael Throop 3 years, 9 months ago

And having a federal gun law will have a member of the Latin Kings or PStone Nation stop and say "Golly, I might break the law here, I'm not getting that gun!!" ? Seriously? You DO believe that? Seriously? You must be a Lawrence lifer. I grew up in Chicago."Tougher national gun laws" will do NOTHING to stop this. Social services increases? Maybe. A real effort towards re establishing a nuclear family instead of having another generation sucking on the teet of The State? Definitely.

Crazy_Larry 3 years, 9 months ago

Move to London then. News flash! We ALLLLL gonna die some day. Deal with that, Maaaaan.

Anthony Mall 3 years, 9 months ago

Can you show me in this article where it says anything to back up your "irresponsible gun owner" theory? Nope.

Phoghorn 3 years, 9 months ago

Perhaps if the fine city of Chicago would prosecute gun crimes, they would have less gun violence. Of course, then they would have to actually enforce the gun laws that are already on the books. Sadly this is much harder than passing ineffective feel good legislation.

notwhatyourthink 3 years, 9 months ago

No there are less criminals in Europe becuase the courts are tougher and the citizens don't have the rights that American's do. Ask Amanda Knox about how the Italian police and courts work.

Michael James Edwards was arrested during a traffic stop in the 1700 block of Kentucky Street about 12:30 a.m. Sunday by a Lawrence police officer who knew him to have a suspended license, said Sgt. Trent McKinley, a Lawrence Police Department spokesman. After seeing suspected marijuana in the vehicle and performing a search, the officer reportedly found more bags of marijuana, drug paraphernalia, a loaded gun and $1,500 in cash.

---great job officer!

thank you.

bearded_gnome 3 years, 9 months ago

yet another law?
silly. good to see this one being enforced.

note that the obama administration has a very poor federal record on gun prosecutions compared to other administrations.

all this 'fast and furious' administration wants to do is limit gun posession by the law abiding. it is obvious.

Anthony Mall 3 years, 9 months ago

Registered owner reports gun stolen, felon headed to prison... Where is the problem?

Phoghorn 3 years, 9 months ago

Ding Ding Ding!!! Winner Winner Chicken Dinner!!!!

SnakeFist 3 years, 9 months ago

The problem is that the gun owner was apparently so irresponsible as to allow his gun to be stolen. Now, if the criminal managed to somehow open the owner's gun safe, then, I agree, no problem. But if the gun was easily accessible then the irresponsible owner's ability to get another gun should be limited.

Anthony Mall 3 years, 9 months ago

So if someone breaks into a house rapes a girl its her fault for allowing a break in? That is the the most ridiculous thing i have ever heard. You clearly know nothing about sizes of gun safes, trigger locks or for that matter anything about guns in general. Gun safes can be moved and broken into and that's not the owners fault. If your car is stolen is it your fault the criminal ran over an old lady? No. Your argument is that the victim (by your intelligent assumption) should be at fault because a felon broke into a house (again your theory that the owner is responsible) found a gun and stole it. That is insane!

Anthony Mall 3 years, 9 months ago

At least you didnt generalize all gun owners and completely ignore responsible owners or anything... Good for you!

homechanger 3 years, 9 months ago

Treat guns like abortions. Do not like them? then don't have one. Stop trying to deny others their right to abortions or guns. After all abortions are only for killing another person just like guns right?

Phoghorn 3 years, 9 months ago

Those might come later. My suspicion is that those charges might still be pending. Another possibility is that the DA might not press those charges if this guy spills some useful information about other crimes and criminals in Douglas County. Either way, I trust our DA to handle this case appropriately. (No, I am not friends with the DA, nor do I have any inside information).

notwhatyourthink 3 years, 9 months ago

I don't think there are any federal suspended driving laws. Illegal drugs in Kansas with git you about 1/2 day in jail and a $500 fine. The federal gun law is by far the worst.

Jason Johnson 3 years, 9 months ago

Hey gun control libs, he got this gun outside of the law.

oldbaldguy 3 years, 9 months ago

we do have too many guns. i don't have an answer. i thinking about buying another one pretty soon.

Jason Johnson 3 years, 9 months ago

I don't normally agree with you, KansasLiberal, but I will today! I'd totally buy a gun valued at $10k if I had the money and my wife gave the OK :)

FlintlockRifle 3 years, 9 months ago

Granddaddy, as G.B and Australia how this happened to them, can't hurt you, huh, just first step to something else from the loons in charge of out use to be great country

Reuben Turner 3 years, 9 months ago

well i be.... what is so hard about obeying the law? well i hope he gets the time that he rightly deserves. I've been knowing this guy a long time and he still ain't got the memo; shame-shame-shame!!
