Isn't anyone curious as to why the man wanted to know what year this is? Perhaps it is not germane to the story, but don't people, when they read something in the paper, muse about it and wonder?
Do we really just want the bare bones, a mere skeleton of a report? Or do we really want to delve into the mystery of just what did happen on that dark street that brought two strangers together?
I would like answers about this too. If police make an arrest, and this guy goes to trial, I will follow it and bring you all the details. Ian Cummings, LJW.
Yes, I was curious to know why someone would do something so strange, as well. Maybe the attacker was drunk or on drugs or mentally ill and asked the question simply to get the other person to stop for a moment so he could attack them? I was robbed and attacked once by a thief on the street who stopped me to ask the time, for a cigarette, and then for my money. I hope the police find this guy before he pulls that move on someone else.
remember "what's the frequency?"
gonna go back in time...
Guy must have thought we were in the 19th century when it was still legal to hit people.
They need to do with our downtown like they've done with Beale St. in Memphis. I was just there last weekend and it was wonderful. They block off the street, have plenty of police on hand and allow you buy drinks on the street, walk around with your drink, hop club to club. It was VERY safe and very enjoyable. You can tell even the cops have fun down there. It generates more than enough money to pay for the police needed to keep it safe. No one dared to mess with anyone else because cops were intermingled with the partiers and they've created a fun atmosphere. The few I saw that had WAY too much to drink were nicely escorted away to taxis so they wouldn't cause any problems.
Someone else that has some VISION! Thank you for sharing your experience. I've said that for years that downtown Lawrence could be really special if it were closed off to through traffic from about 6th to 9th or 10th and do exactly what you described. What we've always tried to pass off as "quaint" has turned into weird and violent.
I don't understand why the people being hit don't hit back
Downtown Lawrence is gaining a very bad reputation for drug addicts and crazies harassing people all hours of the day and night. Something does need to be done. I do not blame the local bars. Bars don't get people high, make people criminals, or make people mentally ill.
Myself included, I know three people who've been randomly jumped downtown in the past several months. It sucks.
If Brownback would just stay out of downtown Lawrence this wouldn't happen so often.
So the victim didn't punch the perp, chase him down, or describe him to police? Why not?
