On Letter: Gender bias

You are right about that. But, then you don't hear about the rowing team, or baseball, volleyball, etc. You would think that mens basketball is the only game at KU.

The media loves to continue the stereotype that sports is a man's world they give little to no coverage to anything but men's basketball and football both programs which are losing money hand or fist. Everyday there are 2-3 articals about the men and maybe one small article on another sport hidden somewhere else.

There are lots of activities that receive no or limited press coverage. It isn't about gender but instead about what the paper believes its readers want to read about.

Watch the coverage on gymnastics and see which events get the majority of the coverage. I can tell you its not the men. Same goes for figure skating.

Unfortunately, success brings support. When the womens program can boast the success that the mens program has then maybe your lte may be appropriate. Otherwise its sour grapes. I don't think you should be putting the womens team up against the mens team, it isn't really fair to the women.

I go to the womens games because I can get tickets to those games. They work very hard and play very hard and I find them very entertaining, but there are still plenty of tickets available at game time.

Don't tell me which sport I should support.

No one is saying who you should support, simply commenting that the newspaper which is supposed to be unbiased is clearly not, they only show strong support and coverage for really two sports teams, KU Football and Mens Basketball. But this is very prevalent in our society, these sports are over hyped and people made to believe they should think very highly of them and the rest of collegiate sports are more just like a hobby. These athletes are given special treatment and handouts and put on some pedestal. What people don't get is that all college athletes are the same, they all work hard for their particular sport and if you are going to go and cover any of them you should treat them fairly, don't force feed the public with these two sports 24/7 and then make a comment that some of the other sports have small crowds, which is to be expected if they are never covered, if nothing is done to promote them people will not flock to them. The KU football team is terrible and is showing no signs of turning that around in the near future but guess what, its still just a college sport, at the end of the day weather they win or lose it makes no impact to the rest of the world.

The phrase "it is what it is" sure would seem to apply here. Consumers consume what they are interested in consuming, and media outlets such as the Journal World tend to catch on and act accordingly. It comes down to what MOST people in Lawrence are MOST interested in, sad as it may be to some.
