On 'Swept under the rug:' How a Lawrence man - an educator and a Boy Scout volunteer - was able to sexually abuse boys for decades

Even now there's no remorse, only concern for himself. Sickening.

I don't care how old he is, he's still a pedophile.

Hope someone has warned his neighbors.

While sexual abuse is a more severe and complex form of abuse, it isn't the only form of child abuse that has been tolerated over the years, whether in the Boy Scouts or elsewhere.

There was an asst. scoutmaster in the troop I was in who was also a teacher, coach and an asst. principal, who had an explosive temper, and was both verbally and physically abusive. He could be quite personable, but it took very little in the way of "provocation" to get a slap across the face. I suspect there have been thousands like him across the country, but no file on them because beating up kids in the name of discipline was accepted practice. Thankfully, that has largely changed.

There is no cure. This serial abuser should be in prison. I am disturbed to know he lives in Lawrence. Forty years ago a man from an old girlfriend's church was fond of having the young boys in the church over to watch football Sunday afternoons. He was found to have abused a nine year old neighbor boy, yet there he sat in church a few weeks later. Wonder how many young children he's abused over the last four decades.

Thank you United Way. United in the abuse of children.

Was there any suspect of foul play when his new wife drowned while scuba diving?

But they sure as heck don't want gay kids in the Boy Scouts. It would really ruin their reputation.

I received my advance open water & rescue diver training from Mask Snorkel Fin during the mid 90s and will have to agree that something was definitely 'off' about Jim Jackson. My primary contact was with Chad, his son, and I will admit at times I could definitely sense 'tension' between Jim and Chad (especially on trips to Stockton). Then again, stress between father and son can be chalked up to family dynamics but I always had a very strange feeling about Jim. But, Karen's presence always was enough for me to chalk it up to my imagination.

My point is that many people enabled this predator for way too long. He has a very long string of victims and I hope that the people who turned their head for YEARS, are ultimately judged for their actions. I believe they will but PARENTS... When it walks like a duck, talks like a duck, chances are... you should trust your GUT... These bottom-feeders know how to hide in plain sight. My son was too young to get certified when Mask Snorkel Fin was operating but I would have NEVER left him with Jim Jackson alone. He WAS/IS that creepy...

Lastly, a pox on the Boy Scout house... They could have stopped this LONG ago. Pathetic and sad...

When I was in Boy Scouts in the 70s, all the older scouts knew who the sexual predator adults were and to avoid them. When it became too obvious often the sexual predators were just told to move on.

Anybody know when Jim and Karen were married? Was Karen his first or second wife? I would like to know because I thought they were married in the mid nineties. Anybody know?

50yearresident, They married in 1964 I believe. And Karen was the only wife, as far as we could tell. She died in 1998.

Was there a 2nd wife after 1998? Was Karen the one that drowned at Lake of the Ozarks?

I don't think she drowned, I believe it was dive related like an air embolism. You can get these several ways but most common is ascending too rapidly.

Her obit says she passed away in Miami so I think it happened on a dive trip, not in MO.

These are sad tales that chronicle a gradual awakening. There were not legal policies or procedures dealing with the issues for about the first 6 million years of humanity, and it's not until groups like the Boy Scouts started caring enough to initiate any procedures at all. They sure didn't get it perfect, but they've been ahead of most of the rest of the nation. The people writing about this seem stuck at the first step. How about boys and girls clubs, 4-H, the churches and schools, swimming teachers, Legion ball coaches? Do those programs have youth protection policies, lists of those accused of every type of abuse? If not, why? Where are they published? Does anyone believe abuse doesn't occur in organizations that have no protection policies? There are even legislators, government officials, accused and convicted regularly. It seems to be too easy to beat up on the Catholic church and the Boy Scouts when abusers of many stripes are found in every segment of our population. Even the Kansas Association of Municipalities (who advise all the towns around Kansas on policies) has little more than police checks, which offer nothing affirmative, nothing procedural, and limit themselves to those on the list of convicted offenders and abusers, which lists would have missed every one of the abusers written about in this article.

I suspect that until police action is involved, there is some liability in accusing someone of acts they have not been convicted of.

Sierraclub -- homosexuality and pedophilism have NOTHING in common. A pedophile may be interested in either males or females, sometimes both. A pedophile is interested in CHILDREN. Homosexuals are interested in other ADULTS of the same sex, not children. Get it?

Not necessarily exclusive of each other, but not necessarily connected. Like having red hair and being tall.

Well, at least we know the monster lives in Lawrence and we can find out where. I agree with an earlier post: he may be an old man, but he is still a pedophile and still a threat. Ugh. Makes me absolutely sick. Mr McKean - I have immense respect for you in choosing to tell your story and, I hope, find some healing.

Did anyone bother to see that he now lives just a couple of blocks from Broken Arrow Elementary and middle schools..........JEEZ!!!!!

I noticed that as well. He's only 0.5 miles or 2640 feet from those two schools. According to the KBI site, there are no laws prohibiting these losers from living near schools, daycare centers or community centers. That needs to change!

Kansanbygrace -- correct. Maybe I wasn't as clear as I should/could have been. I was responding to a post by sierraclub (which I don't see now) to the effect that pedophilia was a recruitment process for homosexuality, a ridiculous and uninformed (uneducated?homophobic?) claim at best. The only thing pedophilia is a recruitment process for is pedophilia--children that are abused are more likely to abuse children as an adult. This goes for physical and mental, as well as sexual abuse. And I apologize if I'm "preaching to the choir" (or another one I like, "teaching my grandmother to suck eggs." Unfortunately, not too many people know that one and get offended. You gotta love the American english.) You seem to know what you're talking about, unlike sierraclub.

What makes me sick is that he has a pedophile recruitment tool in his front yard. A large movable chicken coop on wheels. The neighborhood kids are attracted to it like bugs to a bug zapper. I hope most of the parents in his neighborhood are aware of his past and abuse of kids. I have done my part to inform them. Before he was released from prison, there was another pedophile who had just been paroled living at the same address.

Just wondering if any one out there knows the legal ramifications of a concerned neighbors putting up a sing in their yards warning others of this sicko? I am aware that the city has some ordinance about signs.

There is an app for this also, Life360, is a free app for your smart phone that lets you see all offenders in your area.

The kids at Wyandotte in the late 60's early 70's knew that Jim "Jet" Jackson was a little odd to say the least. It was common knowledge. I guess the teenagers there were too old for him.

While I strongly disagree with the national policy regarding atheism and homosexuality, I think Shaun is grinding to ax a bit exclusively on the BSA. Why not spend more time exposing the school district, and if the parents don't have the responsibility to contact the police, who does?

Nothing right happened here.

For whatever reason. Shaun seems to be fixated on this story. I thought we'd heard enough two stories ago. The point has been made. The man has admitted his guilt. Drop it and move on.
