On Town Talk: Emptying the notebook before tonight's rec center hearing; parks and rec maintenance concerns; sales tax dollars and operating costs; and idea of more retail at Sixth and SLT won't die

Wasn't the NW corner site the land that was native, untouched land that the resident decided to plow up in the middle of the night so the environmentalists could not, or would not prevent him from making a huge profit...if he sold out for commercial use? Or...am I mistaken? If that is the case...I would like to urge all deciding parties, to avoid that land for any kind of profitable use. Like that's gonna happen.

Makin' money is the most important thing in 'Murica. Shoot, I'd wipe out the last of a species if it meant I could get some money fer it.

Chad, this is superb reporting of very important issues. Please keep it coming!

And I wonder if phairen is correct. Is this the area that was plowed up, virgin land? If so, under no circumstances should this area be retail developed. It should instead be a park.

Here we go again. Discussing a project with no real cost numbers available for the third or fourth time.

How many more times is this project going to change?

Where is it in print that KUEA will accept responsibility for all cost over runs?

How much will this project cost the taxpayers annually? Nobody knows. All we get are estimates.

Interesting that you complain that all we have is estimates and not real numbers, but then provide a link to a non-scientific poll where all of 465 people voted. You're demanding "real" numbers while providing "unreal" numbers yourself. You're a funny guy, Merrill.

Yet another post of contrariness for contrariness's sake.

Sure, online polls are not random samples, and need to be taken with a grain of salt. But that one isn't even close, and I'd say it's likely very representative of how people feel about this issue.

Don't believe me? There's one sure way to find out-- have the referendum.

I also wished the cyclist well on another thread, just so you can troll over there and complain, perhaps that I wasn't sincere enough for you.

Have a referendum? Fine with me. Make it happen. (Where have I heard this before).

"I also wished the cyclist well on another thread,"

I'm sure the cyclist will be logging on with his iPhone just to see what you had to say.

Bozo, You said that the poll was likely very representative of the feelings of how people feel about this issue. You see, Bozo, you're falling into a trap. You surround yourself with similar thinking people and then become deluded into thinking that your circle of friends and acquaintances are representative of the much larger population. While you think it's very likely representative of the larger group, I feel equally certain you are wrong. But rather than just say I believe this because my circle of friends and acquaintances agree with me, I will say this. Should this come to a vote, I feel strongly that the overwhelming majority of Lawrence residents couldn't give a flip about this. I feel strongly that there is no way in the world that 50% of eligible voters would even show up to vote. Not 40% either. Not 30%. If the same 16% shows up that did in previous local elections and even if the vote went something like 60% in favor of your position and 40% in favor of mine, that's still under 10% of eligible voters agreeing with you. My point has never been that I'm opposed to a vote. My position is that if the vote came down as I described, I'm not convinced the result is any more representative of the will of the people than simply allowing our elected officials to decide.

The important thing is that a spoiled, multi-millionaire developer will get what he wants and the meatheads who think only about sports will have their rec center. Who cares what the public really wants or needs, right? Oh, and let's pay to extend the infrastructure out to enrich other multi-millionaires as well.

What a cool handle-- so original! My guess is that you're a fan of KU's adult day care program (i.e. sports) and you live in either San Francisco or Santa Fe. Nifty!

One correct guess, I am a huge K.U. fan. Not a big surprise since I live in Lawrence.

Cool. KU sports rulz dude. Like totally centering your identity on other people tossing around bladders is neat-o.

Am I supposed to apologize because not everything I like meets with your approval?

Do you ever tire of being wrong? My life is centered around many things. Family, friends, activities I enjoy. Sports is on my list. You don't know me, so for you to make such an assumptions only highlights your own ignorance. But please do continue, your intentional misuse of the English language takes me back to my youth. You know, a time when people lack judgement, which is also highlighted by your posts.
