Amtrak is usually, if not always, just as expensive as a flight. It is also usually much much slower (almost to the point that train-based trips can't be done during a weekend).
Mega-Bus is a good alternative for some destinations though.

I recently took amtrak to St. Louis from KC and it cost $55 round trip per person. That's cheaper than a tank of gas there and a tank of gas back to KC. It was fun.
