Not until I see fewer 'For Sale' signs in yards and fewer foreclosure notices in papers. Unemployment may be down, but are people earning enough to pay their mortgages at their new jobs?
I live on a cul=de=sac that has 11 houses on it. 3 of the houses have been up for sale this year because of job loss due to business closures. Home values seem to be tanking...

Maybe people just want to leave Lawrence too, or that neighborhood. There are always houses for sale.

A lot of Republicans were upset by last weeks promising unemployment report (7.8%).
In my mind, good news such as this should be welcomed no matter if it is a Republican Govenor or a Democratic President. Our livelihoods rank higher than political affiliation.

Lawrence slips when the rest of the State improves. Being so dependent on public funds puts this university town at risk.

My neighbor recently lost his house in forecloser. I have two people in my family who are underemployed and working for minimum wage. It is hard for us to see that the economy is improving that much.
I am happy for the people who have work and wish them well.

Is average earned-income per Kansan per month data available?
As mentioned above, I'd wager that it is flat or decreasing over the last four or so years. Especially when compared to real inflation, including energy and food costs.

I am always surprised when people blame the president, congress or the government for their financial troubles. After all, government is a word that describes a process of governing that includes multiple layers from city to the United States Congress. It also includes all three branches of the Federal government. I do feel badly for those who are hurting, because it is all about the money and events in one's life can turn sour very fast, no matter how hard you try. I have always thought that Lewis Carrol was using the Red Queen and other characters in Alice in Wonderland as metaphors, especially the running in place scenes. On one level it is just a fun book for children, if you read it at another level you can get so much more out of it. Ordinary people have felt dumped on for a very long time, but if you are looking for a culprit, you might look closer to home, than the Federal level.

Lower unemployment rates is a misleading indicator. The "good news" doesn't take into account those long term unemployed who no longer show up on the books nor those who have moved out of the area. It also doesn't account for the underemployed: highly skilled workers who've taken unskilled, low-paying jobs to keep food on the table.
