I have seen the "axe-throwing" demonstration at many other "pioneer day" events. I can say that I enjoy watching it but I am curious?
How common was it for pioneers to throw axes. Was it common enough that other pioneers had to watch out for flying axes? Were there many flying axe injuries? If so, please explain what the purpose of throwing axes was.
Throwing axes was a contest mostly. Only a fool would throw away his only weapon when his life was in danger.
