95% of these people aren't even from Lawrence let alone Kansas. The only reason they are here is because Lawrence caters to them. I'd like to see the stats of the crime they bring along with them! I know I see the Lawrence Police Dept down there three or four times a day. Ridiculous! Please move this shelter clear on the east side of Douglas County closer to Kansas City!
Every city has a homeless problem, so you can't say the only reason they are here is because we cater to them.
"The family became homeless earlier this year when Moon lost his job as a roofer in Blue Springs, Mo. A lack of help elsewhere led them to Lawrence".
The new shelter, build it and they will come, from every state in the union! This is what we have all been saying all along. The homeless people are not Lawrence residents or even Kansas residents. They are attracted here for the benefits. Lawrence has a reputation for providing free living for the homeless and the lazy. Is this the reputation Lawrence really wants? It doesn't matter how big a new shelter is, it will soon be too small. Build it to accomidate 100, it will soon have two hundred. Build it for 1000, it will soon have two thousand. Build it for 5000 and 10,000 is not out of the picture. What is the solution? Don't build it and the level will stay about whatever it is now. Lawrence simply can not provide shelter for everyone that needs it in the whole United States. To get this new shelter built someone needs to apply for Federal Assistance.
What a warm, compassionate person you are. Let's send you to another state and convert your house into a shelter. You can't think for a minute that those sweet kids and their parents want to be in this situation. If you really have no idea you should consider yourself to be blesssed with ignorance.
We've covered Family promise quite a bit in the recent past:
Just change the word "California" to "Lawrence"
The shelter is breaking all the City's housing rules. Why are they allowed to have 10 families living in 1 basement? What about the fire codes? Off street parking spaces? How many toilets, sinks and bedrooms are provided for each family? Any logical answers?
The new shelter tackles all of those issues. Solution in progress.
Because otherwise those folks would be on the street.
I agree with Informed. If the Family Promise folks are willing, it might be a good idea to see some stories of homeless people actually working, and succeeding, to get out of the homeless cycle. All today's story does is confirm what many of us have been saying for over a year - build it and they will come!
50YEAR has a point. Why is there a double standard for the Laws of Lawrence and the housing codes?
It looks like the J/W is shoving this story to the back burner. They must not want to have two homeless stories running at the top of the comments board.
SKinny Writes:"95% of these people aren't even from Lawrence let alone Kansas. The only reason they are here is because Lawrence caters to them. I'd like to see the stats of the crime they bring along with them!"
Richard, you are describing KU not the shelter.
Look at the booking log from last night. You telling me that all those arrested and gave addresses from places like OP, Prairie Village, Mission are homeless?
WHat about the people who give Emery, Crestline near 15th, the Towers and extreme west Lawrence as their home address? I feel confident in saying they are not from the shelter or were attracted to Lawrence's social services.
KU is a far greater drain on man-power and jail space than the shelter could consciously bring, let alone attract. Take your argument and whine and dine up there.
My hat's off to all the families struggling to survive and get their kids to school while being homeless. I hope things turn better for all of you and that your kids don't grow up to be like the heartless a**holes in this comment section.
I'm one of the first to complain about the impact that increased shelter space has on our city. Single, able-bodied drunks come and harass us as we work and shop downtown because we make this an attractive place for immature, addicted man-boys to come and continue their low-functioning lifestyles.
But I see children in these photos.
If you are anti-family shelter, you are anti-child. I wonder if 50YR is pro-choice? Probably not, because he thinks like a faux-conservative. Forget about where these families come from. Forget about if their parents are lazy losers. In many countries, these children would be prostitutes and slave labor.
I'm sick, sick, sick of how our community continues to warehouse "adults" who have "failed to launch"... but these are children. Children cannot choose for themselves, and if they didn't have this shelter, we'd be blaming the system for not protecting them from the horrors awaiting them on the street.
So which would you have, 50YR? Children in shelters, or child exploitation?
So you are saying if the single able bodied drunks have kids they are welcome here in Lawrence? Having kids makes everything OK? Come from far and wide, just bring your kids? You know child prostition is illegal in the United States don't you.
Seriously...THESE ARE CHILDREN! What ever is happening to their parents, they are NOT to be blamed and how devestating it is for them to be in this situation and NOT be able to change it for themselves. Take the $80.00 a month tha you are paying for internet/cell and cable and donate an hour of time to the school or donate supplies/kids clothes to help these kids. YOU are what make Lawrence a LOSER of a town! These kids are suffering more than we will ever know! And if your child goes to school with one of these students...PLEASE talk to them about those that don't have everything they want, are not stupid, dumb or bad. You don't have to be their friends, just be nice and considerate!
