Schooling Dad

We spoke to a dozen fathers around Lawrence this week, asking them what they've learned from their children. Most say patience. Others say humility or a sense of awe. Brad Rettele, owner of Joe's Bakery, 616 W. Ninth, who has two children, a son, Mason, 5; and a daughter, Delaney, 7.


Gary Bennett, general manager of Laird Noller Automotive, Lawrence, has six children, Michele, 26; David, 24; Brian, 22; Erin, 21, Michael, 16; and Patrick, 11.



Kansas University Chancellor Robert Hemenway, who has eight children, ranging in age from 18 to 39: Gina, Jeremy, Robin, Karintha, Matthew, Langston, Zach and Arna.


William Colburn, Lawrence, a stay-at-home dad and musician, whose daughter Lydia Rae is 14 months old.



Keith Lesher, Lawrence meat cutter at Checkers grocery, has four children, Becky, 22; Emily, 17; Taylor, 16; and Jordan, 10.


Nate Fabrizius, Shawnee, who works in Lawrence as a recruiter for the Kansas National Guard, has a daughter, Chelsea, 13, who was born on Father's Day.



Eric Jackson, a Williamsburg electrician, who has two boys, Storm, 13 and Tate, 8.


Dipak Patel, owner of Dunkin Donuts, has two boys, Neel, 13, and Raj, 7; and a girl, Meela, 8.



Mike Amyx, Lawrence mayor, barber. Christopher, 24.


Jerry Totten, Lawrence letter carrier, has a daughter, Teanna, 11.



Bob Werts, owner of Waxman Candles, three kids, Melanie, 20; Ryder, 16; Mitchel, 15.


John Solbach, a Lawrence attorney who has two sons, John Matthias Solbach IV, 20, and Bartholomew James Solbach III, 19.
