Herbert

Rachael Sudlow and Matthew Herbert, both of Lawrence, were married June 7, 2008, at Wild Hare Vineyard in Baldwin City, with David Reber officiating.
The bride is the daughter of Peter Sudlow and Lorri Sudlow, both of Lawrence.
The groom is the son of Michael and Anne Herbert, Wichita.
Maid of honor was Jacqui Alexander. Best man was Randall Moore. Flower girl was Avery Hamlin.
A reception followed at Wild Hare Vineyard in Baldwin City.
The bride is a 2001 graduate of Lawrence High School. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Rhode Island School of Design in 2005. She is the owner and operator of Sudlow Jewelry. She is also a teacher at the Lawrence Arts Center.
The groom is a 2001 graduate of Free State High School. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in education and a Bachelor of Science degree in history from Kansas University in 2005. He is a teacher at Raintree Montessori and at Highland Park High School in Topeka.
The couple reside in Lawrence.

Merkel and Johnson

Steven and Terri Johnson, Tecumseh, along with Pam Merkel, Eudora, announce the engagement of their children, Sarah Johnson, Lawrence, and Devin Merkel, Eudora.
The future bride is 2006 graduate of Lawrence High School. She is studying marketing management at Johnson County Community College. She is employed with NATEK in Lawrence.
The future groom is also the son of Jeff Merkel, Kansas City. He is a 2005 graduate of Eudora High School. He plans to graduate with an Associate of Arts degree from Johnson County Community College in fall 2008 and continue his education at Kansas University. He is employed with Printing Solutions in Lawrence.
The couple plan a May 30, 2009, wedding at Lawrence Free Methodist Church.

Anniversary

McElhenie

Fred and Marilyn McElhenie will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary next Saturday.
Fred McElhenie and Marilyn Shaffer were married on Aug. 16, 1958, at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Leavenworth.
Fred retired after working 45 years at Kansas University, holding various positions in the division of Student Affairs. Before her retirement, Marilyn worked in retail sales in the Lawrence community.
They also celebrated their anniversary earlier this summer with a family gathering and picnic.
Their children are Timothy, Kansas City, Kan.; Erin, Oak Harbor, Wash.; and Patrick and wife Shirley, Sauk City, Wis.
They have five grandchildren.

Bonebrake

Dawn Manar, Edgerton, Mo., and Daniel Bonebrake, Eudora, were married on March 22, 2008, at Little Church of the West in Las Vegas, with Tim Bonebrake officiating.
The bride is the daughter of Ralph and Mary Manar, Edgerton, Mo.
The groom is the son of Tim and Linda Bonebrake, Eudora.
Maid of honor was Trisha Manar. Best man was Eric Ahlander.
A reception was given at the home of Peggy and Wayne Bernath, aunt and uncle of the groom, in Las Vegas. Another reception was given April 4 at the home of the bride and groom, in Kansas City, Mo.
The bride is a graduate of Winnetonka High School and Penn Valley Community College, in Kansas City, Mo. She is studying for a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. She is a registered nurse for Northcare Hospice and a veteran of the Army Reserve.
The groom is a graduate of Eudora High School and Maple Woods Community College. He is studying for a Bachelor of Science degree in computer science at Park University. He is employed with Blue River Rehabilitation Center and serves in the Army Reserve.
The couple reside in Kansas City, Mo.

Rex and Bev Lockwood along with Denise and Larry Fish, all of Lawrence, announce the engagement of their children, Jessica Lockwood, Lawrence, and Brandon Criss, Ames, Iowa.
The future bride is a 1998 graduate of Lawrence High School. She graduated from Independence College of Cosmetology in 2003. She is a hair stylist at A Creative Style in Lawrence.
The future groom is also the son of Gerald Criss, Perry. He is a 2000 graduate of Lawrence High School. He attended Kansas University for atmospheric science. He is employed for a hydraulic company in Ames in quality control.
The couple plan an Aug. 30, 2008, wedding in Wichita.

Anniversary

Schmitendorf

George and Sheila Schmitendorf celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with a family dinner July 27. They were married July 24, 2008, at Danforth Chapel in Lawrence.
George was a radio and television repairman for many years and later ran an antique store in downtown Lawrence before retiring. Sheila baby-sat for many years and retired from Hallmark in 1991.
Their children are George III, Glendale, Ariz.; Chester, Lawrence; Sandy Cordill and husband Dean, Topeka; Thomas and wife Jennifer, Lawrence; and Rose Kopf, Lawrence.
They have 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Tarin Troth, Baldwin City, and William Wray, Holton, were married April 26, 2008, at St. Dominic Catholic Church in Holton, with the Rev. Richard Halvorson officiating.
The bride is the daughter of Rodney and Gale Troth, Baldwin City.
The groom is the son of Michael Wray, Holton, and Jill Harness, Phoenix.
Maid of honor was Bree Beattie. Best man was Brandon Hundley.
A reception was given at the Holton Country Club.
The bride is employed with Capitol Federal Savings in Topeka, and the groom is employed with Luke Tanking Construction.
The couple reside in Holton.

Otto

Don and Grace Otto, Baldwin City, will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary with a potluck lunch at 11:30 a.m. Sunday at Clearfield Church.
They were married Aug. 14, 1948. The couple have lived in the Clearfield area for 60 years.
Their children are Linda Harrison, Wellsville; and Ron Otto, Lawrence.
They have two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Lindsey Sand and Kevin Sharp, both of Overbrook, were married June 28, 2008, in a gazebo at Lake Shawnee in Topeka, with the Rev. Jericho Hilliard officiating.
The bride is the daughter of William and Rhonda Sand, Topeka.
The groom is the son of Gary Sharp, Topeka, and Pamela Brown, Kansas City, Kan.
Maid of honor was Bethany Barrientez. Best man was Russell Crites.
A reception followed at A Place In Time in Tecumseh.
The bride is a 2003 graduate of Santa Fe Trail High School. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in education from Kansas University in 2007. She is attending the Mary Grimes School of Nursing and employed with Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
The groom is a 2000 graduate of Santa Fe Trail High School. He is employed with Central Mechanical Construction and is an apprentice in its sheet metal licensure program.
The couple reside in Lawrence.

Nelson

Gene and Phyllis Nelson, Baldwin City, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a reception from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Aug. 3 at Baker University Union.
Victor Eugene Nelson and Phyllis Johnson were married July 19, 1958, in Rock Island, Ill.
Gene and Phyllis graduated from Augustana College, Rock Island, in 1958 with bachelor's degrees. Gene earned a doctorate from the University of Colorado. He was the chairman of the biology department at Baker University for more than 25 years. He also taught at Kansas University before coming to Baker in 1970. Phyllis was the director of financial aid at Baker for many years before her current duties as computer specialist and support at the university. She is also a noted potter. They also own and operate the Sports Cache Bait & Tackle store in Baldwin City, a local laundromat and several rental properties.
They have three children: Victor S. Nelson, Wichita; Jon Nelson, Lawrence; and Donald Nelson, Overbrook.
They have eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

The bride is the daughter of Jill and David Wenger, McPherson.
The groom is the son of Susanna and Larry Van Horn, Wichita.
Maid of honor was Shelly Wenger. Best man was Paul Maupin. Bridesmaids were Olivia Mayer, Serena Huerter and Jessica Koch. Groomsmen were Dhyan Suresh, Phillip Harvey and Chris Leiszler. Candlelighters were Denise Van Horn and Amy Van Horn. Ushers were Miles Wenger and Clay Mayer. Flower girl was Kendall Mayer. Ring bearer was Tyler Robbins.
A reception followed with a dinner and dance at Alvamar Country Club.
