Hladky and McDowell

Louie McDowell, McLouth, and Debbie McDowell, Lawrence, announce the engagement of their daughter, Victoria McDowell, McLouth, to Nathan Hladky, Berryton, son of Rick and Rose Ann Hladky, Berryton.
The future bride graduated from McLouth High School. She is employed as an operations coordinator in downtown Kansas City, Mo.
The future groom graduated from Shawnee Heights High School and received a degree in engineering from Kansas State University. He is employed as a traffic engineer with Bucher, Willis and Ratliff in Kansas City, Mo.
The couple plan an Oct. 27, 2007, wedding at Lawrence Wesleyan Church.

Nuzum

Angel Hill and Paul Nuzum were married Sept. 30, 2006, at Plymouth Congregational Church in Lawrence, with Hal LeMert officiating.
The bride is the daughter of John and Lee Hill, Lawrence. The groom is the son of Gary Nuzum, Lawrence, and Sue Martin, Baldwin City.
The matron of honor was Susie Sullivan. The best man was Isaac Wiley. Bridesmaids were Jana Wiley, Erin Mehojah, Alyssa Hill, Micaela Hill and Jillian Hill. Groomsmen were Jacob Williams, D.J. Hite, Tim Dayton, Tommy Wiles and Eric Beightel.
Flower girls were Kate Nuzum and Kylie Mehojah. Candle lighters were Kara Troyer and Vanessa Maryott. Ushers were John Hill, Dane Hill, Travis Sullivan and Billy Mehojah. Readers were Jeannie Maryott and Diantha Voge. Guest book attendant was Corie Prichard. Greeters were Carlie and Jesse Boswell.
A reception was given at Maceli's.
The couple graduated from Lawrence High School in 1995. Angel is a 2001 graduate of Kansas University. She is employed by Diversified Concepts in Lawrence.
Paul is a 2003 graduate of KU. He is employed by GPW and Associates in Lawrence.

Blaser

Karen Rempel and Chip Blaser were married April 21, 2007, at Danforth Chapel at Kansas University, with the Rev. Gary Teske officiating.
The bride is the daughter of Dr. John and Ann Rempel, Wichita. The groom is the son of Chuck and Dee Blaser, Lawrence. The bride's attendants were Kelly Latham and Michael Latham. The groom's attendants were Mitch Blaser and John Blaser.
A reception was given at the Adams Alumni Center.
Karen received undergraduate degrees in chemistry and biochemistry and a Master of Business Administration, all from KU. She is employed as a senior accountant at Wagner Kressig PA.
Chip received an undergraduate degree in business and a Juris Doctor from KU. He is employed as executive director of the Douglas County Community Foundation.
The couple reside in Lawrence.

Colleen Cobb and John Dahl were married June 3, 2006, at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Lawrence, with the Rev. Mick Mulvany officiating.
The bride is the daughter of Alan and Nina Cobb, Lawrence. The groom is the son of John and Alexandra Dahl, Redwood City, Calif.
The matron of honor was Jennifer Shultis. The best man was Eric Dahl. Bridesmaids were Kelly Dahl, Becky Downing and Samantha Landgrebe. Groomsmen were John Cobb, Dusty Downing and Jake Landgrebe.
The bride's personal attendant was Kelly Cobb. The flower girl was Mackenzie Krauss. Ring bearer was Jack Dahl. Ushers were Kyle Cobb and Grant Greenwood. Lectors were Jim Finley and Jack Landgrebe. The bride graduated from Billings West High School in Billings, Mont., in 1996. She is pursuing a degree in family and community services, conflict resolution and family life education at Kansas State University. She is employed as a customer service representative and lender at Sunflower Bank.
The groom graduated from Lawrence High School in 1995. He is pursuing a degree in airway science and safety management at Kansas State University-Salina. He is employed as a flight instructor for Kansas State University.
The couple reside in Salina.

Robert and Rita Trybom, Lawrence, and Terry and Linda Julius, Mulvane, announce the engagement of their children, Bridget Marie Trybom and Ryan Scott Julius, both of Wichita.
The bride is a 2003 graduate of Baldwin High School and attended Johnson County Community College. She is a 2005 graduate of the American Academy of Hair Design in Topeka. She works as an aesthetician at a salon and day spa in Wichita.
The groom is a 2002 graduate of Mulvane High School and attended Cowley County Community College and Kansas University. He graduated from Wichita State University in 2007. He is employed in purchasing at a manufacturing plant in Wichita.

Linscheid and Welch

Caitlin Welch, Lawrence, and Aaron Linscheid, North Newton, announce their engagement, together with their parents.
The future bride is the daughter of Bryan and Carolyn Welch, Lawrence. The groom is the son of David and Cynthia Linscheid, North Newton.
Caitlin is studying psychology and premedicine at Bethel College in North Newton. She is working at an internship doing biomedical research this summer at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City.
Aaron is pursuing a degree in music education at Bethel College. He is working at an internship in the education department at the New York Philharmonic.

John and Ruth Hughes, Lawrence, are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary.
John Irby Hughes and Ruth Roney were married June 5, 1957, in Lawrence.
They both grew up in Lawrence and graduated from Kansas University. John worked at Hallmark Cards Inc. for 37 years. He is a board member and past president of the Leavenworth Credit Union. He also served in various capacities at First Presbyterian Church.
Ruthie worked for H&R Block and was owner and manager of Holiday Travel Agency. She now works at Travellers Inc.
Their children are Erin Mayer, Lawrence; Jennifer McGonigle, Leawood; and Megan Richardson, Lawrence. They have 10 grandchildren.

Anniversary

Hayden

Ellis and Mary Hayden, Lawrence, will celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary on June 10 at a family gathering.
Ellis Ralph Hayden and Mary Louise Buerman were married June 5, 1942, in Ottawa.
They are graduates of Liberty Memorial High School. Ellis served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the South Pacific. He was a baker for 17 years at Rusty's Bakery. The couple also built houses and later owned and operated coin shops.
Their children are Stanley Hayden and wife Linda; Karen Fraser; and the late Linda Butell. They have five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Fraley

The Rev. Richard C. and Madge Fraley, Lawrence, will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on June 9.
Richard Fraley and Madge Salisbury were married June 9, 1957, at the United Methodist Church in St. Marys. They have lived in Lawrence since 1995.
Richard graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1950 and Kansas State University in 1954. He worked for 20 years at various radio stations in Kansas, including KFH in Wichita, KVOE in Emporia, and KWBW and KWHK in Hutchinson. He was executive director of the Dodge City Area Chamber of Commerce for 12 years. He attended St. Paul School of Theology in Kansas City, Mo., and was ordained a United Methodist minister in 1994. He served as pastor of Healy United Methodist Church from 1987 until 1995, when he retired.
Madge graduated from St. Marys High School in 1954. She attended Baker University and Emporia State University, and worked as a secretary in Dodge City and Lawrence. She is a member of the United Methodist Women.
Their children are Linda Martin, Nancy Childers and James Fraley and their families, all of Lawrence. They have five grandchildren.

Anniversary

Handley

Ralph and Maxine Handley, Fenton, Mich., are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary with a gathering for family and friends today at their home. They also traveled to Florence, Italy, in May.
Ralph Handley and Maxine Mills were married June 2, 1957, in Tonganoxie.
Ralph served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956. He worked in labor relations for GM-Delphi for 44 years and retired in 2004. He is a consultant for an independent company.
Maxine grew up in Tonganoxie and graduated from Tonganoxie High School. She was a real estate agent for 20 years and retired in 2001.
Their children are Joyce Henk and husband Michael, Fenton, Mich.; and Steve Handley, Rochester, Ind. They have three granddaughters and three stepgrandsons.

Anniversary

Burkhead

Carl and Joyce Burkhead, Lawrence, will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with a program and reception for friends and family from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. July 1 at the Mustard Seed Christian Fellowship in Lawrence.
Carl Edward Burkhead and Nancy Joyce Pollard were married June 2, 1957, at Belmont Christian Church in Kansas City, Mo.
Carl graduated from the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy in Rolla. They moved to Lawrence in 1962 when Carl began graduate work in environmental engineering at Kansas University. After he completed his master's degree and doctorate, the couple moved to Lexington, Ky., where Carl taught at the University of Kentucky. They returned to Lawrence in 1969, and Carl taught in the department of civil engineering at KU. He received a research Fulbright to Israel in 1987 and a teaching Fulbright to Portugal in 1994. He retired in 2003.
Since retirement, Carl has traveled to Guatemala, Mongolia and Africa on mission trips. He is the academic dean of Advancing the Kingdom Bible Colleges in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.
Joyce is a homemaker. She has worked at Cross Reference Christian Bookstore, Christian Book and Gift, Little Women-Little Men, Weaver's and J.C. Penney.
Their children are Jeff Burkhead, Burlington; and Carla Wilson and husband Tim, Lingle, Wyo. They have seven grandchildren, a grandson-in-law and two great-grandsons.

Steffen

Richard "Dick" and Eva Steffen, Lawrence, will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. June 10 at First United Methodist Church in Lawrence.
Richard Steffen and Eva Dewey Curran were married June 7, 1957, at First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Al Bramble officiating.
Richard graduated from Eudora High School and attended Lawrence Business College. He was employed by the Douglas County Treasurer's Office and by the contractor at Sunflower Ordnance Works.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1942 and was discharged in 1946 as a staff sergeant. He worked at the Lawrence Airport and Charlton Insurance Agency. He also was employed in the comptroller's office at Kansas University and retired in 1984 as assistant comptroller for payroll and staff benefits.
Eva graduated from Belfast High School in New York. She worked for relatives in the Buffalo area and moved to Lawrence in 1952. She worked for J.C. Penney Co., Parsons & Kring Floor Covering and Marks Jewelers.
In retirement, they have hosted students from 14 countries in the Lawrence Host Family Program, now the Lawrence Friendship Family Program, and have visited many of their former host students.

The future bride is a 2003 graduate of Lawrence High School and a 2006 graduate of Washburn University. She is employed as a physical therapy assistant with TherapyWorks in Lawrence.
The future groom is a 2000 graduate of Perry-Lecompton High School and attended Kansas University. He is employed with GS Management Inc.

Nichole is a 2002 graduate of Decatur County High School and is attending culinary school at Johnson County Community College. She is employed as a cook for a fraternity house in Lawrence.
Chris is a 2002 graduate of McCook High School and is studying 2D character animation studies through the Academy of Art. He is employed as a web producer for the Lawrence Journal-World.
