Three Lawrence residents killed in small plane crash near Chicago

Three area physicians who live in Lawrence were killed when their small plane crashed shortly after takeoff Sunday night in Chicago. The twin-engine Beechcraft Baron crashed around 10:40 p.m. Sunday in the Chicago suburb of Palos Hills, shortly after takeoff from Chicago Midway Airport. Tausif Rehman, Ali A. Kanchwala and Maria Javaid were aboard the plane, according to a spokesperson with Stormont-Vail HealthCare, where Rehman and Kanchwala worked. By Sara Shepherd

Cassie Hedges, a white female, was in the driver's seat of a stationary vehicle at the Kwik Shop at 3440 W. Sixth St. when a passenger in the backseat accidentally discharged a weapon, shooting through the driver's seat and hitting Hedges, Lawrence Police Sgt. Ted Bordman said.
