Man arrested for ‘aggressive panhandling’

Lawrence Police arrested a 23-year-old man for “aggressive panhandling” on Thursday night in front of a restaurant in downtown Lawrence.The 26-year-old victim told police he was in front of Buffalo Wild Wings, 1012 Mass., shortly before 7 p.m. when the man began asking him for money and threatened him when he refused to give it. Police say they found the suspect about an hour later seated on the ground between the Red Lyon Tavern and the Replay Lounge in the 900 block of Mass. Street. He was booked into jail.Other reports:¢Man interrupts burglary: Police on Friday asked for the public’s help identifying the suspect in a home burglary Oct. 31 in the 500 block of Frontier Road. According to a report, a 19-year-old man told police he came home and found items lying on the floor of his living room and an unknown man walking toward him from a rear bedroom. He told police he questioned the man but that he walked out the front door and started running north away from the residence. He is described as a white male in his late 20s or early 30s with wavy reddish-brown hair, about 6 feet tall, with a stocky build. About $820 in property was missing from the home. Anyone with information is asked to call the Crime Stoppers hotline at 843-TIPS.¢ Attempted strong-arm robbery:A 29-year-old bicyclist told police someone tried to pull off his backpack Thursday night as he rode in the 700 block of West Sixth Street. The man told police he was riding west on the sidewalk about 8:10 p.m. when a man walking east approached the back of his bicycle and pulled on the left side of the backpack. The victim told police he sped away and last saw the suspect – described as a balding male – running north along Indiana Street.¢Animal cruelty:Police took a tan-and-white pit bull into custody Thursday morning after it escaped from the back yard of a home in the 1800 block of Miller drive. Because of the dog’s condition, police are investigating it as a possible case of cruelty to animals.¢Rape report: Police are investigating a report that a 16-year-old boy raped a 15-year-old female acquaintance earlier this week at a home in east Lawrence. Police were called to Lawrence Memorial Hospital on Tuesday to take the report. She told officers it happened between 10:30 p.m. and midnight Monday.-contributed by Eric Weslander.
