Color art: CMYK as EPS, Tiff or JPEG
Art resolution: For art that need not be enlarged or reduced (placed at 100%): grayscale or color, 180 to 240 dpi; line art, 400 to 600 dpi.
PDF files are preferred. If submitting collected files or Individual ad elements, art should be 100% of the ad size and its resolution should be 400 to 600 dpi for line art and 180 to 240 dpi for grayscale or color art. All color art must be CMYK. Ads may be sent to the Lawrence Journal-World through e-mail attachments to firstname.lastname@example.org.
All fonts should be converted to paths/outlines. If a font is not embedded, we will substitute a font that is as close a match as we can. Your collected fonts will not be loaded into our system. The best way to assure your fonts will appear as desired is to submit art as a PDF.
PDF Distiller Job File
We can send you a copy of our PDF job description file that will automatically set up Acrobat Distiller for our paper. Send your request to email@example.com. The file will be called LJW Settings.joboptions. When it is placed within the settings folder of your Distiller folder, it will automatically give you the optimum settings for our paper. Once installed, it must be selected from your Printer Options drop down menu in Distiller.
We make every effort to ensure that ads submitted print in the best manner possible. To ensure quality reproduction, ads must be sent in a form that will work with our combination of machines and software. We encourage new clients to send ads in early so that the ads may be tested with our system and any glitches can be worked out.
Additional Considerations for Printing on Newsprint
Areas of solid black, including type, boxes, logos, etc., should be set as 100% black (no cyan, magenta, or yellow) when possible. This is especially important when using small type.
Total ink limit should ideally be set at 240% in Photoshop’s CMYK color settings preferences.
Rules that are 4 points or thinner, as well as small type, should be reproduced as one color only (C, M, Y or K). Small type is defined as: sans-serif 7 points or smaller, serif 12 points or smaller, fine serif 14 points or smaller.
Type smaller than 12 points should not be reversed on a four-color background, with 10 points being the minimum for any backround. Serif type 12 points or smaller should not be reversed.

Ad depth/Gutter charges
- Full depth ads are charged at 21”
- Full page inches equal 126 column inches
- Advertisements over 18½” will be charged full column depth (tabloid over 10”)
- Double Truck advertisements must be a minimum of 185 total column inches or 12.5col. x 11” deep.
- Gutter space on Double Trucks will be charged at one-half column.
- All other retail display advertisements will be measured and charged as they appear in the printed paper.
Contracts and rates
Advertising will be accepted from bona fide retail groups only when it is the sole purpose to promote common traits such as location or business-type. A single billing shall be sent to the manager or owner of said group.
Single Advertiser Rates
All of the rates contained in this rate card are intended for use by a single advertiser only, unless noted otherwise. All advertising must exclusively promote merchandise or services offered by the advertiser placing the ad. Only authorized representatives of the Journal-World may accept or schedule any form of advertising in the Journal-World.
The Journal-World reserves the right to revise advertising rates at any time. Current contract holders will be notified in writing 30 days prior to any across-the-board rate adjustment, except in the case of changes made after fulfillment or expiration of a contract, when new rates may be in effect or new levels of performance selected. Advertisers who do not accept the new rates, may elect to cancel without penalty, by giving notice in writing at least 15 days prior to the effective date of the new rates. Cancellations after published deadlines may be subject to a cancellation fee.
Display advertising contracts shall not be binding upon the Lawrence Journal-World until approved by the Advertising Manager.
Advertising published by the Journal-World that utilizes copy, illustrations or both created in whole or part by the personnel of the Journal-World, are covered under the copyrights thereof and shall remain the exclusive property of the Journal-World. Reproduction cannot be made without specific consent. The Journal-World reserves the right to insert its copyright mark in such advertisements.

Guidelines and Standards
Available to recognized advertising agencies. Both client and agency must have approved credit. Agency clients will be responsible for payment in the event the agency fails to make payment. All credit rules and guidelines apply.
Should the advertiser exceed or fall short of the space contracted, the earned rate or open rate will be applied accordingly. Short rates and rebates will be applied to the customer’s monthly invoice at the end of the contract term.
All accounts are payable no later than the end of the next billing period or month. In the event of bankruptcy, insolvency or failure of the advertiser to fulfill their contract, the Journal-World shall be entitled to demand or claim payment at the earned contract or open rate from the date of signing for all space used. Past due balances will be assessed a service charge of 1¾% each month (21½% annually) on the unpaid balance. The Journal-World reserves the right to cancel any customer contract if the terms of payment are not met.
- The Journal-World reserves the right to edit, alter, cancel or reject any advertisement at any time. If such an event would occur, the customer will be notified in advance.
- Advertising that resembles news matter must carry the words “paid advertisement” at the top of the ad. A border must contain the contents of the ad.
- Ad copy must be set in a sans-serif font.
While we cannot guarantee ad placement, every attempt will be made to accommodate position requests. However, the Journal-World receives excellent readership of all pages. A position may be fixed for an additional 25% on the ad cost, if the position is available.
The advertiser and/or advertising agency agrees to defend and indemnify the publisher against any and all liability, loss, or expense arising from claims of libel, unfair competition, unfair trade practices, infringements of trademarks, copyrights, trade names, patents, or proprietary rights or violation of rights of privacy resulting from the publication of the advertiser’s advertisement.
Ads cancelled after published deadlines may be subject to a 25% space cancellation fee.
Errors and Omissions
The Journal-World will exercise every care and diligence to prevent error and omission in any advertisement. The publisher shall not be liable for slight changes or typographical errors that do not lessen the value of an advertisement. In the event of errors that materially affect the value of the advertisement, the Journal-World will be responsible for only the space in which the error occurred. The publisher’s liability for other errors or omissions in connection with an advertisement is strictly limited to publication of the advertisement in any subsequent issue or the refund of any monies paid for the advertisement. Any request for adjustment on billing must be made within one month of initial invoice.
The Journal-World will fax, e-mail, or deliver a finished proof of your advertisement provided copy has been submitted by deadline.
A reasonable number of tearsheets will be provided to the business for no additional charge. Affidavits of publication will be provided free of charge when copies of the papers in which the advertisements appeared are no longer available.
